Topcoder Open (TCO)

About Topcoder Open

Topcoder Open (TCO) is our annual online and onsite tournament to celebrate and reward the community. TCO encompasses every day competitions at Topcoder and adds points to them. While you’re competing, you’re earning TCO points and more potential prizes as well as trips to the TCO Finals!

For example, you register and submit for a development challenge. You win first place for that challenge and earn the prize money. You also would win a certain number of TCO points for earning first place. Each competition within a certain time frame would enable you more opportunities to earn TCO points. At the end of the TCO time frame, your points total could be high enough to earn you a trip to the onsite TCO finals in the USA or additional prize money.

TCO takes place online with points accumulation for development and design tracks and online elimination-style rounds for the data science tracks. After all the competitions online are completed, the top performers from each track win prizes and trips to the USA TCO Finals to compete, network, and meet other members and admin.

About TCO Competitions

Topcoder Open encompasses most of the competition tracks offered at Topcoder. However each TCO differs in the competition tracks, rules, and prizes. Be sure to check on the current TCO website to confirm the competition tracks being offered.

For the 2016 Topcoder Open, points are currently available for the following competition tracks. Please click on the competition track below to view more information about the TCO16 competition.

If you want to compete in TCO, all you need to do is compete on a TCO eligible contest and you’ll be automatically registered for the tournament. For the data science competitions, you only need to take part in the first round.

Please note that you must be a Topcoder member as well as meet all of the eligibility requirements posted in the TCO Rules. View the current TCO16 competition rules here.

About TCO Onsite Events

The most celebrated and exciting part of Topcoder Open is the onsite events; in particular, the onsite finals event in the USA. As of 2015, the TCO started having smaller regional events around the world. The goal of these regional events is to bring the TCO to more Topcoder members.

Regional TCO events are one day events including some form of competition with prizes (for example, a hackathon), food and drink, networking opportunities, and fun.

The beloved TCO Onsite Finals in the USA bring great honor and excitement to those who qualify to attend. TCO Finalists enjoy being treated like VIPs and deserve all the recognition they get.

As a TCO Finalist, you get an all-expense paid trip to the USA event, the opportunity to compete live, on stage, and become a Topcoder champion. Each year the TCO Finals are held someone in the USA.

About the Prizes and Trips

As a Topcoder Open competitor, you’re eligible for cash prizes and non cash prizes such as trips to the Onsite Finals and t-shirts! Each stage of the TCO gives away additional prizes on top of the traditional challenge prizes. More information about trips and prizes can be found on the competition rules pages on the current TCO website.

Cash prizes are paid out within 60 days after the Onsite Finals event. All cash prize winners will still need to follow the usual Topcoder payment policies and procedures found here.

Participatory prizes and non-cash prizes (such as t-shirts) will be mailed within one month following the conclusion of the Onsite Finals. Please allow 6-12 weeks for delivery.

For more information on prizes, please visit the Terms under Prize Payment.

Finalists who win trips to the Onsite Finals in the USA will be notified by Topcoder. Topcoder admins will handle the coordination and payment of the following:

  • Airfare to and from the event
  • Ground transportation to and from the event and airport
  • Hotel accommodations
  • Certain meals during the event

Finalists who require a Visa to enter the USA can request a Visa invitation letter from Topcoder to assist them with their Visa appointment. Upon notification of winning a trip, Finalists will be given all the relevant information needed to request a visa letter and details about the trip.
